I get this error when I setup Project 2003 Pro through Tools > Enterprise
Options > Project Server Accounts.

"Cannot connect.

Project was unable to establish a connection with the selected Project
Server. This could be caused by a loss of network connectivity or problems
with the Project Server or database"

The 'Test Connection' feature successfully detects the project server (2003).
It cant be a network problem right. (Also because the server is on the same
machine!)

But without using any of that when I use Collaborate > Publish everything
works fine. It publishes the project file to the Project Server successfully.

For both method I used windows user authentication (the domain accounts).
Tried using to Project accounts for the previous too.

Pleeease help me out as I cant use any of the enterprise features without
the above mentioned option functioning properly right?

thanks!

Try opening your hosts file and an entry like this:

127.0.0.1 yourmachinename

When you run project on the same machine as Project Server, it may not be
able to resolve the local machine name without this entry.

the authentication part seems to work ok. because I tried false usernames and
it gave 'incorrect password' errors. the problem is somewhere between
authentication and getting the data itself I think. any ideas??

just providing more info in the hope of getting a response:)
got these from the event viewer. an 'error' and a 'warning' amidst all the
'information' entries while trying to log in thru MS Project Pro 2003 to Proj
Server 2003, to open a file there (not 'edit', edit doesnt work as none of my
enterprise features seem to work!).

You have Portal Server running on the same box? A fact you shouldn't omit.
Did you examine the knowledgebase article that covers installing Project
Server and Portal Server on the same box?

Have you read the following:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;840701

If not, you need to learn how to search the KB, and make this a regular
habit.

I came across some strange activity.

from the project centre I cant access one project file because I changed the
publisher's access rights. even on an admin account I cant get it to open.

I just put up some other files on different admin accounts just to test. The
files do open into ms project but before it opens, after a password prompt, I
get that same "cannot connect" error. but the file still opens and I can save
changes as well. (my 'edit' doesnt work anyway as they arent enteprise
projects, because my enteprise features dont seem to work)

The first error you posted indicates possible conflicts with SharePoint's
managed paths. Your other errors potentially indicate a badly designed
permissions matrix in Project Server. I suggest that you logon using the
built-in Administrator account to sort those out.

the project server database is in an instance '(local)' of sql server, is
that ok? a friend of mine said that unnamed instances can be messy sometimes?
the sharepoint server database is in a seperate instance 'sharepointcentral'.

The only difference in using a named instance is that you need to specify
the servername/instancename in your connection strings.
